• I’m still trying to figure out Hunch.

• Meme Scenery from Waxy: Identify all the internet memes with their subject & macro removed.

Can you

• The art of UP (imdb) on Lou Romano’s blogspot (link). Many illustrations are quite Mary Blair (wikipedia, Disney Legends).

Wikipedia says Eyvind Earle (April 26, 1916 – July 20, 2000) was an American artist, author and illustrator, noted for his contribution to the background illustration and styling of Disney animated films in the 1950s.

His official site has numerous galleries for perusal. I especially recommend the Serigraph section – you’ll notice in images such as the one above a measured style recalling Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, for which he was responsible [cite] for styling, backgrounds and color.

This site lets you make, share & browse virtual mix tapes (up to 8 tracks per mix). There are some limitations on how many tracks you can skip, etc. but it’s only to keep the music companies happy.

While you’re there check out The Inferno by Graeme Revell feat. Emma Shapplin from the score for The Red Planet. It’s the first track on the mix in that link & it gives me the goose-bumps.

Most days we just lay around the castle

It seemed the Wombat & I haven’t been getting much alone time recently, so I set up a bit of a date for us.

First we ate at the Artisan Hotel, which I kept heard was one of the best-kept secrets, etc. etc. The reason it is a secret at all is it’s damned location – tucked right into the armpit of the I-15 Near Sahara and Highland/strip club avenue.

The food was alright. Admittedly, I’m not a discerning eater. And I don’t believe that I’ve ever tasted what 5 or even 4 stars tastes like. That said, if was pretty good, nothing to write home about, with the exception of the Bruchetta. It was fresh and tasty – and I don’t even like Bruchetta. I give this place kudos for the ambiance:

It’s definitely got charm (and some authentic old Vegas cigarette smell), and it wasn’t expensive – I would consider going again if it was the right choice.

The real point of the evening was to see a production of Beauty and the Beast:

As you can see from the poster, the music created by Alan Menken (Disney, IMDB, Wikipedia) for Disney’s animated film, which is great. I had never seen Disney’s staged version, so I was surprised by the addition of 7 songs which I had not before heard.

Maybe I’m just biased toward the songs originally composed for the movie (since I have heard them hundreds of times), but they felt awkward to me. They didn’t have the same “what the French call a certain… I don’t know what”.  C’est la vie,

Ben Butcher = amazing artist

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

I wanted to let you know about the fantastic collage & mixed-media artist, Ben Butcher.

Blue Bayou, Ben Butcher

Blue Bayou, Ben Butcher

With a distinct style to his own his pieces have no problems catching eyes, but it is the first work that I saw of his that keeps me coming back. I saw the Blue Bayou at the Disney Gallery in Disneyland earlier this year. Check out the hi-res on his site.

It IS a small world, after all, isn’t it?

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Just wanted to let you in on a little secret project of mine. I started by combining a few of the best photographs of the It’s a Small World ride facade in paint.net (Windows only), manipulating the images until vertical & horizontal lines were (moire or less) straight. In new layers above the composite image, I drew line-art of the major features of the ride building’s design.

My intention is to cut basswood or balsa to match the individual geometric design elements, then position/arrange & glue them in place to make a faux-3D IASW which I will place in a 20″ x 9″, 1″ deep shadowbox. If it goes easily enough, I’ll probably make a few more to sell on Etsy. I’m still having trouble deciding against taking the time, using thicker basswood planks & carving the elements in relief.

In the most recent Tales From the Laughing Place, there is a feature article on the creation of It’s a Small World for Disney Hong Kong, there is an image of a simplified (and somewhat larger) IASW model. It’s flat, cut to profile & painted like the ride building. It looks like a great re-Make: as a gift for a young child’s.
