Playing with some 1/16″ graph paper last Sunday, I made this:

It’s nice – I’ll probably use it in this new flash puzzle I’m building – but I didn’t feel that was enough for a blog post, so I made it into a font you can download & install.

Classy, huh?

A Cloudburst

More marker-work:

Sometimes you begin an illustration with an idea of how it should turn out, but your hands just start making stuff up & you get something even better.

My scanner was a great help in making the sun glare in the clouds look just right.

End of the line

Given my Adirondack chair didn’t make it past it’s first day, I thought I would record this one before anything bad happened to it as well.

I made it over a year ago, so perhaps it’s a more lucky piece.

I go through periods where I can’t stop thinking about trains, and this was made during one of those cycles.

Here’s a strange little doodle,

Often my doodles look like they could be mundane objects from a far-future place. This has the look of some kind of pan-dimensional sextant. It reminds me of an epic doodle I made while still in high school. I think I kept it – if I find it I’ll scan it for you.

We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot

Yo Ho, me hearties. Here’s a quick one for you – The Sailing Ship Columbia. I’ve copied the angle from a great twilight photograph of the ship’s rigging. I saw it on miceage.com, but I wasn’t able to  track it down today for you.

It’s sharpie & pastel on vellum. Enjoy – Or else.

By the way, what are you up to these days? Yes you. The one who instead of leaving a comment sends me an email. I’m always interested in hearing what other people are working – oh! that reminds me:

My friend Blake could use some honest feedback on a new music project he’s working on. Listen to his demo track Crumbs at myspace.com/gingercube If you have a myspace account (a pox on you) friend him or leave a comment. If not, let me know what you think & I’ll pass it along. That track gets stuck in my head.

Blake might help me record some stuff of my own for your enjoyment as well. I have some MP3s from old bands I’ve been in, let me know if you want a listen.

One Good Bird Deserves Another

I really wanted to get some clay under my fingernails, and here is the result: a little ducky.

Here’s the concept art, a sketch of an existing design.

Egghead

I wish all drawings would go this fast & result in something this cute.

It actually took longer to scan/edit the images & make this post than it did to draw him. I could tell it was flowing, and usually you wouldn’t want to interrupt that but I thought it looked okay without inking, so I scanned it while it was still pencil & marker. (“Take a picture, it’ll last longer“)

Wall Art Perspective

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

I missed a post yesterday, but not because I didn’t do anything creative: I just made food, not drawings! Sometimes I just make stuff up when I’m cooking & it turns out pretty güd.

After Wombat’s wonderful mac-n-cheese was enjoyed by all, I sat down with some sculpy. After a few minutes without inspiration, I decided to change medium. I really wanted to do some sculpting, but I don’t want to “force it”.

I found myself staring at the wall:

So here is my rendering:

Me Hearties, yo-ho!

In the book Disneyland Paris: From Sketch to Reality (by Alain Littaye, Didier Ghez), there is a small image of a great piece of concept art for Pirates of the Caribbean ride. I really like the energy in the shot, so I thought I would try see if I could capture a little myself.

While I’m happy with the way it turned out I’m not happy with the way it scanned. I did this on vellum; with inking on the front and marker color applied to the back. This method gives it a certain luminosity which is hard to capture with the scanner. It’s this color effect that really is the point of the exercise, and in the full-size (click the above image) you can see some spots of unfortunate inking.

Hope you like it.

Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones, Jr.

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

I drew this on Friday, but wasn’t able to get it to you until now.

Earlier this week, I saw an image of Indy which I believe to be during a scene from Last Crusade at Barnett College.  I thought it would make a good challenge for a couple of reasons:

  • I have no confidence in drawing human and animal figures, so this was a good image to try to sketch (not trace) to push my envelope a bit; and
  • When people think of Indiana Jones, they of course envision something to the effect of this:

  • So if I stick to the conventional image of this character (bull whip, fedora, leather jacket, stubble), you could identify him even if I had drawn it with crayon. With my left hand. With my eyes closed.

Well that’s no good. I wanted to push myself to actually capture the person, not their effect. So here’s the image I used:

Not terrible, really. I think I should do more portraits, given this is my first in over a decade.
